CHAPTER 6

Online Faculty and Theological Competency

Chapter 5 stressed that the goal of the Christian life is formation into the image of Christ, who is the true image of God. As online theological training seeks to prepare students to be effective ministers of the gospel, this formation into Christ’s image must be prioritized above information transfer. This chapter will discuss the hiring of online faculty members, arguing that institutions must prioritize theological competencies ahead of pedagogical and technological competencies. By prioritize it is meant that theological anthropology provides the foundation and the alignment for both pedagogy (how and why we teach) and technology (the medium of online), meaning the order of priority is theological, then pedagogical, and then technological. Stated another way, the formation of the student into the image of Christ (theological consideration) provides the foundation for the process of teaching (pedagogical consideration), which in turn informs and shapes the way in which the online medium is utilized (technological consideration). Chapter 7 will consider online faculty development and training, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing ongoing spiritual formation amidst concerns for theological, technological, and pedagogical competencies, which is a result of considering the example of the apostle Paul’s life and ministry.
